Hyundai Mobis launches innovative glove box for electric cars

The new component will already be present in the top-of-the-line version of the new Kia EV9

  • The Parabolic Motion glove box was created to provide increased interior space for electric vehicles.
  • Inspired by the overhead compartment of an airplane, the storage capacity has increased to over 8 liters.
  • Responding to the future mobility market’s demand for “spatial innovation”, the new glovebox strategy is reinforced with cutting-edge driver-centric technology.

Image shows the “Parabolic Motion Glove Box”, a new glove box concept for electric vehicles developed by Hyundai Mobis, featured in the Kia EV9. The parabolic motion mechanism is facilitated by the connecting component on the right side of the glove box.

Hyundai Mobis has launched a new type of glove box, Parabolic Motion, specifically created for electric vehicles. The innovative part includes a larger glove box capacity and a user-friendly design that minimizes the risk of a passenger’s knee or lap colliding when the glove box is opened.

The “Parabolic Motion” has a different opening system from conventional ones, making a parabola like the on-board luggage compartments of airplanes. This new design was made possible by better use of the space left inside the vehicle by the absence of the combustion engine.

In automotive terminology, a “glove box” is a compartment near the passenger’s knee that typically holds items such as car manuals, tissues, sunglasses and folding umbrellas. It is one of the larger spaces available in the vehicle for storing small objects.

To optimize the glove box of electric vehicles, Hyundai Mobis has significantly increased its storage capacity from 5.5 liters to more than 8 liters.

Idea born in internal competition

Hyundai Mobis’ latest technological breakthrough originated from an internal competition. This creative concept won a gold medal in the 2021 internal ideas competition, and evolved into an actual product that led to production. The proposal to develop an optimized glove box mechanism for electric vehicles initially attracted a lot of attention. Since 2019, Hyundai Mobis has been promoting a voluntary and creative R&D (Research and Development) culture among its employees, having already accumulated more than 3,200 ideas in the first half of this year.

“We are committed to the continuous development of tailor-made technologies that prioritize user experience,” said Choi Jae-seob, Head of Finishing Module Engineering at Hyundai Mobis.

The glove box with Parabolic Motion technology is now ready to be implemented on production lines. Its debut is already scheduled to be present in the top-of-the-line version of the EV9, the new electric SUV produced by Kia.

This Hyundai Mobis innovation is not yet scheduled to be present in models sold in the Brazilian market.
