Hyundai Mobis presented, in South Korea, the great news in terms of technology in electric vehicles: the sistem 4-Wheel Steer (4WS).

The system, which has been applied to the Hyundai i10, brings a set of high-tech embedded features, especially in the vehicle’s wheels.

Through the 4-Wheel Steer, the vehicle has the motorized wheels with mobility permission to perform the crab walking mode (walking sideways, similar to the walking of a crab), zero turn, zero turn, independent movements on the four wheels with up to 90 degrees of angle, according to the driver’s command. Unlike the e-Corner system, which integrates the steering, brakes, damper and engine on the route into a single package, the 4-Wheel Steer has the functionality in the steering system itself.

The new system uses steer-by-wire technology combined with the motor installed on each wheel, which can turn them simultaneously and individually according to the driver’s needs.

With 4WS technology, it is possible for the car to turn all wheels simultaneously to the same or opposite direction; by the pivot rotation mode, the wheels can rotate freely around a specific point; with Crab Mode activated, the wheels move laterally in parallel, like the gait of a crab; and it is still possible to park the vehicle using the zero rotation feature, with the front wheels in and the rear wheels out.

The new technology is not yet expected to arrive in vehicles sold in the Brazilian market.
