Hyundai Mobis develops one-touch parking technology

Mobis Parking Sistem 1.0P allows the vehicle to “learn” to park itself, with the driver using ultrasonic sensors and SVM cameras

  • Implementation of “Memory Parking Assist”, which learns the driving route and performs parking using ultrasonic and surround-view monitor cameras.
  • Hyundai Mobis has added a parking line recognition feature, which allows autonomous parking even in an empty space with no vehicles around.
  • The aim is to take the lead in the market by integrating sensors into the state-of-the-art parking control system, essential in the era of autonomous driving and electrification.

Hyundai Mobis South Korea announced in September the Mobis Parking System (MPS) 1.0 Premium, a performance-enhanced edition of the world’s first state-of-the-art parking control system, developed by the company in 2021.

According to industry reviews, the addition of new parking control technologies and core element technologies to existing technology has further solidified Hyundai Mobis’ position in the high-performance parking control sector.

In the system’s main function, Memory Parking Assist, the driver parks in route learning mode and the vehicle memorizes the route. After that, all it takes is the touch of a button to enable autonomous parking in the space.

The essence of this parking technology is the fusion of video-based sensors, merging ultrasonic sensors and SVM (Surround View Monitor) cameras. Advanced technology has also been applied that simultaneously measures the vehicle’s location and maps it using the information obtained. By implementing these techniques originating from robotics, it was found that the driving assistance features allow a storage distance of up to 100 meters.

Through video-based sensor fusion, Hyundai Mobis has added a parking line recognition feature, which allows autonomous parking even in an empty space with no vehicles around, by recognizing the lines marking the space in the parking lot. This technology was presented to the public for the first time when installed in Kia’s recently launched electric vehicle, the EV9 SUV, as well as in the G90, GV60 and IONIQ 6.

Trends and Market

Hyundai Mobis plans to continue its research and development to the level of fully unmanned autonomous parking (AVP: Auto Valet Parking). In addition, the company continues to unveil urban autonomous driving innovations such as “crab” driving and zero turn demonstrations with the ‘e-Corner System’, realizing its plan to lead the future mobility market.

The company hopes that this technology will be well received in countries like Europe and China, where designated parking areas or private garages are relatively common. With the new technology, it is possible to park remotely in the same place based on the driving route previously learned. At the moment, there are no plans to use this technology in vehicles produced in Portugal.
