Hyundai Mobis develops new safety technology to prevent rear-end collisions

  • Technology alerts drivers to rear-end collision risks while driving on highways and increases vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance.
  • Driver safety: existing driving control technology is linked to front cameras and rear side radar sensors.
  • New defensive driving solution for rear vehicles promotes safety against frontal collisions, reinforcing the competitiveness of mobility technology.

Hyundai Mobis recently announced in South Korea the development of Smart Cruise Control (SCC) technology, designed to increase safety on highways.

The new feature incorporates a rear safety control system capable of alerting the driver and automatically maintaining a safe distance when a vehicle approaches too closely from behind. To do this, it uses sensors such as rear radars and front cameras, integrated into the steering control system.

Situations in which a vehicle approaches quickly from behind are common on highways and can create a sense of risk or even cause collisions. With this in mind, Mobis has developed defensive driving technology that anticipates the movements of these vehicles, helping to steer the car away from dangerous situations. This active control detects rear threats in real time.

This technology works when the driver uses the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function on the highway. This makes it possible to detect that an approaching vehicle is approximately ten meters or less away. First, an audible signal will be emitted or a visual warning will be displayed on the dashboard. If the situation persists after a certain amount of time, the vehicle will automatically increase speed to maintain a safe distance. During this time, rear side sensors detect the movement of the vehicle behind. Meanwhile, the front camera recognizes the lane and the vehicle ahead to assist in safe acceleration.

Some global automakers already apply safety technology to prevent rear-end collisions on a large scale. When a rear-end collision is about to happen, the system issues a warning and adjusts the tension of the seat belts in preparation for the impact. However, these functions are not yet advanced enough for the vehicle to control itself autonomously. Hyundai Mobis has improved its technology to allow vehicles to independently adjust the distance between the front and rear vehicles and avoid dangerous situations.

Mobis plans to further expand the scope of autonomous control for defensive driving against rear vehicles. Currently, the company is developing a lane change function to escape dangerous situations, as well as an acceleration control function that allows the vehicle to accelerate on its own. “We will actively protect the safety of mobility users by providing solutions that can intelligently handle not only front safety but also dangerous situations caused by rear vehicles while driving,” said Jung Soo-kyung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Automotive Electronics Business Unit.

There is no forecast yet for when the new technology will be available in vehicles sold in the Brazilian market.
