- Headlights project real-time driving information on the road surface and guide pedestrians to cross safely with a virtual crosswalk.
- The system is integrated with the camera sensor and GPS navigation to display information and help drivers to drive safely at night.
- The technology was developed for communication between drivers and pedestrians. With this, Hyundai Mobis gains a competitive advantage with this new technology.

Recently, Hyundai Mobis announced in South Korea the development of a new generation of headlights, which show, in real time, the traffic signs projected on the ground surface where the vehicle travels. The technology is the latest innovation that significantly reduces nighttime accidents for drivers and pedestrians.
The HD lighting system developed by Hyundai Mobis is an intelligent technology that visualizes traffic signs in text or shapes. For example, the lamp shows that there are roadworks ahead using symbols for drivers, while projecting the crosswalk sign on the road surface with lamp lights to enable people to cross the road safely.
While there are already safety technologies that share driving information with users, as GPS navigation and the front panel, the HD Lighting System is seen as a driver-oriented technology with the functionality to communicate with pedestrians.
The HD Lighting System is composed of HD micro LEDs and a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), which works like a reflector. For operation to occur, key technologies meticulously control the device and software logic. Information obtained from the front camera and GPS navigation can also be integrated to provide the necessary information to the driver.
How does the system work?
The HD lighting system has about 25,000 micro LEDs with a width of 0.04 mm, even thinner than a human hair. This is 250 times more LEDs than are installed in the currently mass-produced LED headlights (80-120 LEDs). This allows the lamp to control the light more sensitively, since it has a much bigger number of LEDs, which helps the lamp to locate objects and pedestrians much more accurately.
The DMD is an ultra-precise controller that reflects light using microscopic mirrors that measure only 0.01 mm. The lights emitted by densely packed LEDs are reflected through 1.3 million digital mirrors to project the shapes and symbols onto the road surface. The LEDs, which have increased 10,000 times compared to the previous DMD, can be individually controlled to project clear and accurate information on streets and roads, regardless of their condition.
An important feature of this new technology from Hyundai Mobis is that the data provided by the camera sensor and GPS navigation is projected in real time. For example, when a vehicle approaches a construction zone, the HD Lighting System displays the “Under Construction” symbol 1.5 meters wide at 15 meters away from the car, and can also inform the driver of the speed limit. The technology is specialized to increase visibility and prevent accidents at night. Thus, the driver can easily recognize when the car is approaching a speed bump and where the entrances and exits of the road are.
With the car in motion, the camera sensor recognizes pedestrians and, along the way, shows a virtual pedestrian lane projected onto the road when the car stops. This enables the so-called “communication lighting” technology, which warns pedestrians through the headlights, to materialize.
The new technology is not yet expected to arrive in vehicles sold in the Brazilian market.
