Hyundai Mobis forms global alliance for next-generation display technologies

  • Hyundai Mobis and its global partners have announced the formation of a strategic alliance for the development of Holographic Windshield Display (HWD), a next-generation display technology for vehicles.
  • The alliance brings together complementary expertise in vehicle systems (Hyundai Mobis), optics (ZEISS), functional films (tesa), and automotive glass (Saint-Gobain Sekurit), with the goal of starting mass production in 2029.
  • HWD uses the vehicle’s front windshield as a giant display, separating the driver and passenger screens to ensure safety and convenience.

Hyundai Mobis announced the launch of the “Quad Alliance,” a partnership with leading global companies to secure the market for next-generation vehicle displays.

This alliance for technological development includes Germany’s ZEISS, which has world-class optical technology; Germany’s tesa, a global leader in adhesives; and France’s Saint-Gobain Sekurit, Europe’s leading manufacturer of automotive glass, which have joined forces with Hyundai Mobis. Hyundai Mobis plans to expand the collaborative ecosystem to four companies and pursue the effective commercialization of HWDs by 2029.

Holographic Windshield Display (HWD) is an innovative technology that uses the vehicle’s front windshield as a huge display without a separate physical screen, allowing drivers to see driving information without distracting their gaze. Its main advantage lies in the accurate projection of various driving information and entertainment images at the eye level of the driver and passenger, using a special “Holographic Optical Element (HOE)” film laminated inside the windshield glass.

HWD uses a holographic optical element (HOE) with a transmission of 92% or higher (transparent glass level) and a brightness of over 10,000 nits (twice the level of outdoor LED panels), providing clear image quality even in bright sunlight.

In addition, the system prevents the driver from viewing the content displayed to the passenger, allowing them to safely access videos, games, and other information while driving. The technology maximizes both safety and interior space utilization, and is expected to become an essential feature for future mobility.

Through this alliance, Hyundai Mobis will oversee the design and integration of the HWD system as a whole and the image projector, leveraging its expertise in vehicle interface solutions.

ZEISS will lead the optical design and development of the HOE film; tesa will be responsible for the mass replication of holographic films; and Saint-Gobain Sekurit will be responsible for the high-precision lamination process of the film onto the windshield glass.

Supply chain ecosystem

This technological collaboration means establishing an integrated supply chain solution, ranging from the optical design of the HWD to the replication of the HOE and the final assembly of the system. Hyundai Mobis’ strategy is to ensure the quality and feasibility of mass production by establishing a supply chain ecosystem, in addition to its cutting-edge technological capabilities.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Mobis has generated significant interest among major customers by successively presenting advanced models featuring this technology at global exhibitions, including CES, Germany’s IAA, and the Shanghai Motor Show. At CES 2026, held in January in the United States, the company received an Innovation Award, once again reinforcing its technological leadership.

“Through this essential technology that opens the door to the future of automotive displays, we will offer differentiated value to our customers,” said Jung Soo-kyung, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Mobis’ Automotive Electronics Business Unit. “We will collaborate closely with global partners during the mass production phase to maximize our technological competitiveness and consolidate our image as leaders in innovative technology in the global market.”
