Hyundai Mobis develops world’s first rollable screen for cars

New technology has display with lightweight structure and minimal volume

  • The screen scrolls up and down, has four different modules, and can expand up to 30 inches.
  • The monitor’s lightweight structure allows it to be displayed anywhere, with the expectation of revolutionizing the interior design of the car.
  • New technology ensures reliability and durability, which attracts global customers and increases the technological gap with the competition.

Hyundai Mobis has developed the world’s first rollable display for installation on car dashboards. Users can adjust the size of the display depending on the usage situation. The screen takes up minimal space, contributing significantly to harmonizing the interior design of vehicles.

The unit features a screen that scrolls up and scrolls down when displaying driving information, including the navigator. The display disappears when the engine is turned off; drivers can also scroll only a third of the screen upward with minimal necessary driving information. The screen is expanded by up to two-thirds when using navigation, and can be switched to full screen mode, with the 16:9 aspect ratio, for watching videos while the vehicle is parked or when charging the electric motor.

The rollable screen takes up minimal space, and in purpose-built vehicles, such as for leisure activities and families, it can be installed on the roof between the front and rear seats or also on the side next to the seats.

The Hyundai Mobis display comes in QuadHD (QHD) resolution or higher. The company will be able to produce 30-inch or larger screens. The biggest feature of the new screen is its lightweight structure with a minimal volume, with a size of 12 cm deep, in order to be installed near the driver’s seat.

Hyundai Mobis has been researching the development of the scrollable screen for the past two years. So far, the company had already developed other technologies such as the SVM system (360° Surround View Monitor), as well as the head-up display (HUD), which projects information onto the windshield of the car. Because of this, the novelty now presented is considered a milestone, for pioneering the development of this type of retractable screen.

Vice President, Head of Convenience and Electronic Control (EC) at Hyundai Mobis, Han Young-hoon said, “We are looking forward to becoming a game changer in the car display market with our differentiated technology. We will be a pioneer in the global market by driving the trend of new infotainment technologies.”

The main target audience is North American and European luxury brands. The proven reliable and durable technology is attracting the interest of many customers around the world, but is not yet expected to be applied to vehicles in the Brazilian market.

Recently, Hyundai Mobis also announced another very innovative technology called ‘In-Wheel’, which allows independent control of each of the four wheels of the vehicle.
